Best Parks in Little Falls, Minnesota

A river running through town gives Little Falls a strong set of parks — a riverfront centerpiece, a small zoo among old-growth pines, disc golf on the water, and a state park next door.

Which parks are worth your time in Little Falls?

Start with Maple Island Park on the riverfront, then add Pine Grove Zoo, Le Bourget Park for disc golf and river access, and Belle Prairie Park north of town. For a full day outdoors, Charles A. Lindbergh State Park offers about seven miles of trails.

Maple Island Park

If Little Falls has a front porch, this is it. Maple Island Park runs along the Mississippi at the center of town, with walking paths, flower gardens, picnic tables, a shelter, restrooms, and fishing spots — all within sight of the historic 1888 dam. The maples that give it its name make it a standout in fall. It is also the home ground of the summer Dam Festival, so on the third weekend of June it trades quiet for a parade and fireworks.

Pine Grove Zoo

Not every town of 9,000 has a zoo, and fewer have one set in old-growth forest. Pine Grove Zoo sits within Pine Grove Park among one of the last remaining groves of white pines in Minnesota. Its residents include black bears, bison, cougars, tigers, and timber wolves, kept in natural-habitat enclosures, and the grounds add playgrounds and walking trails under the pines. A log cabin on site can be reserved for gatherings. The zoo runs on a seasonal schedule — check its site for current hours and admission before you go.

Le Bourget Park

Le Bourget sits on the river and leans outdoor-recreation: a boat ramp, fishing, and a walking trail. In 2020 it added a nine-hole disc golf course — lightly wooded, with two basket positions per hole, so it plays differently on repeat visits. It is the most disc-golf-friendly of the city parks, and a straightforward place to put a boat in the water. There is a story behind the name, too — see the full Le Bourget Park guide.

Belle Prairie Park

North of town along the Mississippi, Belle Prairie is a county park with a disc golf course, a playground, and picnicking under the trees — a good pick when downtown is busy on an event weekend and you want space and shade.

A splash pad on the north end

Little Falls opened a splash pad on the north end of town, near the Twitchell playground along Prairie Drive, with changing rooms alongside it. It was about a decade in the making — the city set money aside each year and local donors chipped in — and it gives families a free way to cool off on a hot afternoon. Check the city recreation pages for the current season and hours.

The big one next door

For a proper day outdoors, the standout is not a city park at all but Charles A. Lindbergh State Park, on the southern edge of town: nearly 570 acres along Pike Creek and the Mississippi, with about seven miles of trails, a campground, and 1930s stone-and-log buildings. It gets its own guide.
