Sobieski, Minnesota: History & Heritage
One of Morrison County's oldest Polish settlements, a village of a couple hundred southwest of Little Falls, named for a Polish king and built around the church of St. Stanislaus.
Sobieski is a small city of about 210 people in western Morrison County, southwest of Little Falls. Polish Catholics settled the area in the 1870s, and the town takes its name from John III Sobieski, a king of Poland. Its draw is heritage rather than attractions.
A Polish village named for a king
The first Polish families reached this corner of Morrison County in 1876, and many carried Kashubian roots from the Baltic coast of Poland. They named their community for John III Sobieski, the seventeenth-century Polish king, a choice that said plainly who had built the place. Father Francis Xavier Pierz, whose recruiting shaped so much of the county, is counted among those who helped start Catholic communities here.
St. Stanislaus
Faith came with the settlers. Devoted to St. Stanislaus, a patron saint of Poland, the community organized its parish in the early 1880s, and St. Stanislaus Church still anchors the village today as part of the Haven of Mercy group of Catholic parishes. The fuller account of the county's churches is in Churches of Little Falls and Morrison County.
Visiting Sobieski
Sobieski is a place to slow down rather than a checklist of attractions. The church and the quiet farm country around it are the point. Most visitors pair a look here with the Soo Line Trail in nearby Bowlus or the sights in Little Falls; the wider list is in things to do around Little Falls.
