Flensburg, Minnesota: History & the Town Today
A railroad-and-mill village of a couple hundred southwest of Little Falls, the fifth of the county's Haven of Mercy Catholic towns, and about as quiet and rural as central Minnesota gets.
Flensburg is a small city of about 210 people in Morrison County, roughly nine miles west-southwest of Little Falls. It grew from a railroad siding and a mill in the 1880s and belongs to the Haven of Mercy group of Catholic parishes that also covers Little Falls, Randall, and Sobieski.
From a mill siding to a village
Flensburg owes its existence to a rail line and a sawmill. After the Little Falls and Dakota Railroad was finished in 1882, a sidetrack ran to a mill at this spot, first known as "Flen's Landing" or "Flynn's Siding" after J. C. Flynn of Little Falls. Olaf and Dagmar Searle platted the townsite in March 1890, and the village grew up around the mill and the tracks, the same lumber-and-railroad story that built most of the county's small towns.
The town today
Flensburg stayed small. Around 210 people live here, and like its neighbors it is a residential, rural village rather than a tourist stop. Its Catholic parish is part of the Haven of Mercy group, and its appeal is the quiet, historic central-Minnesota character it shares with the rest of the towns around Little Falls.
